TAGBILARAN CITY— The city government of Tagbilaran City has begun implementing its “Libreng Sakay” program, providing free transportation to help commuters cope with rising costs and transportation challenges.
The initiative deploys city buses to serve residents daily, particularly workers and students who are heavily reliant on public transport.
The program runs from Monday to Saturday, with trips scheduled during peak hours—6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Mayor Jane Yap said the program is designed as an immediate response to ease the financial burden on commuters while improving access to reliable transportation.
She added the program is part of the city’s concrete actions to address the needs of its constituents.
“Dili ni pang promisa lang, kini konkretong aksyon aron matabangan ang atong mga commuters sa panahon sa kalisod,” Yap said.
The city government also revealed plans to further strengthen the program by partnering with jeepney and multicab drivers through a subsidy scheme once the necessary ordinance is approved. This move aims to expand coverage while supporting local transport operators.
Officials emphasized that the initiative is a partnership rather than competition, assuring that drivers will still receive income and government support.
“Sa atong mga drivers kauban nato ani. Dili ni kompetensya, kundi partnership aron mas mapalapad ang serbisyo ug masiguro nga naa gihapon moy kita ug suporta gikan sa atong gobyerno,” Yap added.
The local government underscored that the program reflects its commitment to inclusive and people-centered governance, ensuring that no commuter is left behind in accessing essential transport services.
