TAGBILARAN CITY—Bohol province’s athletes proudly returned home after securing a back-to-back runner-up finish in the recent sports meet, showcasing their dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship on the regional stage.
This came after the team placed second overall for the second consecutive year in the final tally of the 2026 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet, earning 244 medals—84 gold, 85 silver, and 75 bronze.
The finish marks a significant jump for the delegation from last year’s CVIRAA, when they earned 191 medals—61 gold, 51 silver, and 75 bronze—and placed second overall in 2025.
On his Facebook page, Gov. Aris Aumentado congratulated the delegation on the achievement, which brought pride to the province.
“Mapasalamaton gayud kita ngadto sa tanan alang sa inyong mga paningkamot, sakripisyo, ug dedikasyon nga nagdala og dakong dungog sa atong probinsya,” he wrote.
“Inyong gidala ug gipakita ngadto sa maong regional sporting event ang disiplina, kahanas, ug panaghiusa sa mga Bol-anon,” the governor added.
According to the official CVIRAA 2026 website, Cebu City won overall with 146 gold medals, Cebu Province placed third with 49 gold medals, and Bohol’s lone component city, Tagbilaran, placed sixth with 32 gold medals.
Additionally, Bohol province was awarded 1st Place for Best Learner Rights and Protection Implementer, 3rd Place for Excellence in Visual Communication, and 3rd Place as the Most Disciplined Delegation—a true display of camaraderie among Boholano youth representing the Bohol Island Geopark.
The delegation also placed second in both the elementary and secondary categories out of 12 school divisions from Cebu and Bohol.
Last year, Bohol Province competed against 20 delegations, when school divisions from Negros Oriental and Siquijor provinces were still part of Region VII.
This 244-medal finish reflects a remarkable improvement from last year’s 191 medals, 143 in 2024, and 97 in 2023, marking steady growth in Bohol’s standing in CVIRAA over the past years—finishing 6th in 2023, 3rd in 2024, and 2nd in 2025.
Hosted in Naga City, Cebu, the week-long sports event ran from March 22 to 28, with the Bohol Province team comprising 1,026 delegates.
This consists of 553 athletes, 173 coaches, and 110 technical officials from the Department of Education (DepEd)–Bohol.
Dr. Fay Luarez, Schools Division Superintendent; Dr. Eduardo Ompad, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent; Dr. Neil Michael Olaivar, OIC Assistant Schools Division Superintendent; Dr. Juan Torregosa, Division Sports Officer; and Jaypee Ian Morgia, Education Development Center OIC, accepted the awards during the CVIRAA closing ceremony held on March 27 at the Enan Chiong Activity Center.
“We express profound gratitude to Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado; our committed provincial board members, provincial school board members, and all local government units, led by the 47 municipal mayors of Bohol, for your steadfast financial and moral support to the 1,026-strong SDO-Bohol delegation,” Luarez expressed in a video posted on the DepEd–Bohol Facebook page.
Luarez also thanked stakeholders, public school district supervisors, committee members, technical officials, coaches, trainers, and the athletes for their commitment, sacrifices, and teamwork, which made the representation a success.
Aligned with its Strategic Governance Roadmap, the Provincial Government, under Aumentado’s leadership, has intensified support through the Special Education Fund for DepEd–Bohol’s sports development, allocating a Php 15.3 million budget this year.
Working in tandem with the Provincial Youth Development Office, headed by Metodio Maraguinot Jr., a more convergent, strategic, and grassroots-level approach was applied to the planning, selection, training, and representation of athletes through strategic partnerships. (PIMO/JSS)
