TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — An animal welfare group has condemned the alleged slaughter and consumption of a dog in a village in San Miguel town, calling on the public to help identify those involved.
In a statement, Bohol Animal Rescue and Kindness (Bark) Inc. reported that a “dog lechon” incident recently occurred in Barangay San Jose, San Miguel. The group said it received photos showing the cooked dog and individuals who allegedly took part in the activity.
“Slaughtering and eating dogs is a heartless act of cruelty that has no place in a compassionate society. Killing them for food is not culture—it is violence,” the group said.
Bark emphasized that the act is punishable under Republic Act No. 8485, as amended by Republic Act No. 10631, as well as Republic Act No. 9482.
The group also warned that individuals who document and post such acts on social media may be contributing to the normalization of animal cruelty.
Bark said it is withholding the release of videos related to the incident due to the presence of minors, but is urging witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.
“We urge the public to help us with information… If we remain silent, we are complicit,” the group said.
Another advocacy group, Bohol Animal Sanctuary, echoed the call, denouncing the act as “cruel and inhumane” and urging the community to support efforts to hold those responsible accountable.
Both groups appealed to residents to report any details about the incident, including the identities and whereabouts of those involved, stressing that all information will be handled responsibly.
Authorities have yet to issue a statement as of posting.
