Urban Energy Development Corporation and Mabuhay Power Holdings Corporation (MPHC) have officially launched the construction of its 8.4 megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Tagbilaran City in Bohol on Tuesday, April 22.

Spanning roughly 10 hectares across Tagbilaran City, extending to Barangay Libertad, Baclayon, the ground-mounted solar facility is expected to generate approximately 16,947 MWh of clean energy annually—enough to electrify around 7,000 households.

It is also forecasted to reduce carbon emissions by 15,000 tons per year, the equivalent of planting 750 trees annually.

The event was graced by Gov. Aris Aumentado, Tagbilaran Mayor Jane Yap, Roel Castro of Primelectric Holdings, Inc and MORE Power, MPHC Executive Chairman Sherwin Hing, and MPHC President and CEO Alfie Reyes.

With a project cost exceeding P450 million, the solar farm will be embedded in the Bohol Light Company Inc. (BLCI) distribution network under a 20-year power supply agreement.

It will be completed within 12 to 16 months, which will bring economic, environmental, and employment benefits to the community, including up to 70 construction jobs, 12 operational roles, and over P75 million in government taxes and fees over two decades.

Moreover, Gov. Aris Aumentado, in his message, underscored the importance of stable and renewable energy in boosting investors’ trust in Bohol’s sustainable growth.

“Makatubag ta nga okay ang power, stable ang power, ug barato ang power tungod kay naay mga solar farms ug uban pang klase nga makahatag og green power,” Aumentado emphasized.

The project, developed by Urban Energy Development Corporation (UEDC) and backed by the parent company, MabuhayPower Holdings Corporation (MPHC), aligns with the provincial government’s Strategic Change Agenda.

“This is truly a powerful milestone for our city,” said Tagbilaran Mayor Jane Yap, who also recognized the collaborative efforts of the provincial government, UEDC, MPHC, and BLCI for the city’s development.

Aside from being the first ground-mounted solar plant of MPHC, Chairman Sherwin Hing expressed that the project is very close to his heart and the company’s vision of powering the country with clean, affordable, and reliable energy.

“It marks the start of progress with purpose,” MPHC President and CEO Alfie Reyes shared in his short message, while BLCI President and CEO Roel Casto also reaffirmed its commitment to powering progress in the province through sustainable sources.

With the addition of the Tagbilaran-Baclayon SPP, Bohol proves its thrust as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the first and only in the Philippines, in promoting sustainable and climate-resilient developments through renewable energy.  (PIMO/JSS with a report from Helen Castaño)
