The death of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, better known as Pope Francis, has sent shockwaves across the globe on Monday, April 21, 2025.

The Vatican confirmed that the pontiff passed away on Easter Monday at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.

This happened a day after Pope Francis appeared in St Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, April 20, after surviving a serious bout of double pneumonia, greeting thousands of worshippers despite health concerns after recent hospitalisation for pneumonia.

All eyes are pointed towards Philippines as three Filipinos are eligible to participate in the papal conclave. They are Luis Antonio Tagle, Pablo Virgilio David and
Jose Advincula.

Tagle is currently serving as the Pro-Prefect for the Section of First Evangelization of the Dicastery for Evangelization (formerly the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples) since June 5, 2022, and as the President of Interdicasterial Commission for Consecrated Religious since December 8, 2019.

David served as Bishop of Kalookan since 2016. He was auxiliary bishop of San Fernando from 2006 to 2015. He has been president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines since 2021. Pope Francis made him a cardinal on December 7, 2024.

He became 33rd Archbishop of Manila in 2021. He became a cardinal in November 2020. He previously served as Bishop of San Carlos from 2001 to 2011 and Metropolitan Archbishop of Cápiz from 2011 to 2021. On December 16, 2020, Pope Francis appointed Advincula as a member of the Dicastery for Clergy.
