The best athletes from the different towns of Bohol finally gathered during the opening program of the 2024 Boholympics held on April 20 at the Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School (DCPNHS) gymnasium for the chance to represent the province in the Batang Pinoy (BP) and the Philippine National Games (PNG) later this year.
Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado gave the keynote address and declared the 2024 Boholympics open.
“Nagapasalig ako nga andam kita, sa inyong kagamhanang probinsyal, pinaagi sa PYDO, nga mutabang kaninyo aron mapalambo pa ang inyong pagdasig sa inyong yutang natawhan,” Aumentado declared.
He assured the youth of holistic development through sports as prioritized in his strategic change agenda.
The provincial government allocated P10 million for Boholmpics who will compete in the national level this December.
In the roll call of delegations led by Gelvi John Bongato, PYDO sports section head, 1,624 young athletes were present with 173 coaches and 139 delegation officials from 44 participating municipalities.
“Boholympics is not just about winning, not the results, but it’s about the process, the lessons, the friendships, and remember, your journey does not end here; this is only the start of everything,” said Sangguniang Kabataan Provincial Federated President Lawrence Xavier Ancla in his inspirational message.
Georich Cardino, 2023 PNG gold medalist lit the torch and the Boholympics cauldron while Bohol’s pride Vanessa Sarno, a perennial weightlifter medalist, took the lead in the oath of sportsmanship.
Sarno qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing in the top 10 qualifying rankings in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup last April 7 in Thailand.
