The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the National Irrigation Administration Region VII- Bohol Integrated Irrigation System (NIA Region VII-BIIS) on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, released some 150,000 tilapia fingerlings into Malinao Dam in Pilar town, Bohol
as part of their continuing efforts to revitalize the aquaculture industry.

Boholanos, especially residents and fisherfolk near Malinao Dam are set to benefit directly from this initiative, as the increased fish population will provide them with enhanced fishing opportunities.

This program was initiated by the local government Unit of Pilar-Office of the Provincial Agriculture-Municipal Agriculture Office.

Engr. Evelina Putong, BIIS head, shared that the release of tilapia fingerlings into Malinao Dam is a proactive measure to ensure food security and bolster the livelihoods of Boholanos in the area.

“This annual activity serves as a crucial support system for local communities, especially in times of dry season. This provides a sustainable source of fish for the Boholanos in the vicinity, ensuring food security,” Putong said.

By utilizing Malinao Dam, aside from its main purpose of irrigation, this collaborative effort exemplifies a commitment to both environmental conservation and the well-being of local communities, addressing the ongoing need to generate a continuous supply of food.

The influx of tilapia fingerlings is expected to not only improve local fish stocks but also to address hunger and poverty.

This stocking activity was witnessed by Pilar Mayor Wilson Pajo, BFAR Center Chief Candido Samijon, NIA Officials, and the some residents.
