Former HNU prexy Fr. Ted Gapuz dies at 78

Fr. Teodorico “Ted” Gapuz, SVD, former president of the Divine Word College of Tagbilaran (DWC-T), now Holy Name University (HNU), died on Saturday night, February 8.

He was 78.

His death was confirmed by Societas Verbi Divini (SVD)-Philippines on Sunday.

Fr. Gapuz was born in Agoo, La Union on July 17, 1941.He was ordained as a priest in 1967 at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay.

Even before ordination, Fr. Gapuz was already recognized as a potential educator, administrator, and writer.

He was appointed president of DWC-T from 1976 to 1983.

He left his legacy with the purchase of the 7.5-hectare campus in Dampas and the transfer of the high school department to Janseen Heights. The DWC-T eventually became HNU.

In 2005, he was transferred from Central Office to the Southern Province.

He was assigned as vice president for Academic Affairs of the University of San Carlos, Cebu City from 2005-2008.

He went back to HNU in 2009. He was appointed as rector of the community.

He was a missionary at the HNU, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and vice-rector until his death.
