TALIBON, Bohol — Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado has urged Bohol’s young people to venture into dairy farming and production, citing the industry’s growing potential to provide sustainable income and strengthen the local economy.
Speaking during the 10th Bohol Dairy Festival at the Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Multipurpose Center in Talibon, Aumentado celebrated the progress of the province’s dairy industry over the past 10 years.
He noted that dairy farming in Bohol has evolved from a small-scale activity, when only a few farmers produced milk mainly for Christmas-season cheese-making, into an industry that now produces around 420,000 liters of milk a year.
At an average farm-gate price of ₱60 per liter, the production has generated nearly ₱26 million in additional income for local farmers.
Romulo Garcia, dairy production coordinator of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, said the Bohol Dairy Cooperative now generates an estimated ₱80 million to ₱90 million annually from supplying milk to the Department of Education and the Department of Social Welfare and Development for their supplementary milk-feeding programs.
The industry has also created new livelihood opportunities beyond milk production. Some young Boholanos are earning from growing forage crops for dairy cattle, while silage-making allows farmers to preserve nutritious feed that can be used during the dry season.
Aumentado said developing more young farmers and dairy professionals is essential to ensuring the industry’s long-term growth.
“Let us encourage our young people to enter dairy farming and production and train more dairy professionals who can lead our local industry toward a stronger and more sustainable future,” he said.
The governor also appealed to the national government to continue providing investments, programs and other forms of support to expand Bohol’s dairy industry.
He said the sector’s potential could help create more jobs and livelihood opportunities while contributing significantly to the province’s economic development.
