TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — A police officer assigned to the Ubay Municipal Police Station surrendered to authorities after allegedly shooting and wounding a farmer in Barangay Lusong, Buenavista, Bohol, early Monday morning.
The officer, a 33-year-old patrolman, voluntarily reported to the Buenavista Municipal Police Station at around 5:10 a.m. on June 30 and disclosed his involvement in the shooting, which reportedly occurred at about 4:30 a.m.
According to the patrolman, he was riding a motorcycle with his younger brother when they stopped near the house of the victim, identified only as “Marlito,” a 37-year-old farmer from Purok 6, Barangay Lusong.
The officer claimed that after his brother called out the victim’s name, the latter allegedly opened fire at them, prompting him to return fire three times using his service firearm.
While the officer was being questioned, the Buenavista police also received a report from a concerned citizen about a man who had been wounded in the same incident.
Responding officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound above his right knee. Investigators recovered three fired 9mm cartridge cases, a deformed bullet slug, and a Yamaha TFX motorcycle believed to have been left behind by the suspect at the scene.
The injured farmer was taken to the Francisco Dagohoy District Hospital in Inabanga for medical treatment.
The patrolman later surrendered his issued 9mm Taurus service pistol to investigators after learning that the victim had been injured in the shooting.
He remains under the custody of the Buenavista Municipal Police Station while investigators prepare an attempted homicide complaint against him.
The recovered pieces of evidence have been submitted for ballistic examination as police continue their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
