TAGBILARAN CITY — The provincial government of Bohol joined the nationwide celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day on Friday, June 12, with a wreath-laying ceremony and commemorative program at the Bohol Provincial Capitol.

This year’s observance carried the theme, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,” highlighting the enduring value of freedom and the responsibility of Filipinos to uphold the ideals and sacrifices that led to the nation’s independence.

The program, organized by the Bohol Center for Culture and Arts Development, opened with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony attended by provincial officials, representatives of national government agencies, veterans’ groups, and civic organizations.

Leading the tribute were Vice Governor Nicanor Besas, Board Member Tita Baja, and representatives of Bohol’s congressional districts and Tagbilaran City.

Officials and representatives from agencies including the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, Department of Public Works and Highways, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority also joined the ceremony.

A ceremonial 21-gun salute was conducted in honor of the country’s heroes whose sacrifices paved the way for Philippine independence.

The wreath-laying rites were followed by a commemorative program featuring ecumenical prayers and cultural presentations reflecting the nation’s history and aspirations for the future.

Sacrifices

In their messages, government representatives emphasized that Independence Day is not only a remembrance of the sacrifices of Filipino heroes but also a call for citizens to uphold freedom through unity, peace, and active participation in nation-building.

Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado’s message, delivered by Besas, reflected on the challenges and triumphs experienced by Filipinos throughout history.

“Aduna’y mga higayon nga nisadya kita sa mga kalamposan ug kadaogan; aduna usab mga gutlo diin nasinati sa katawhan ang mga nagkadaiyang hagit ug mga trahedya,” the governor’s message stated.

Aumentado said that through God’s grace and guidance, Filipinos have overcome adversity and emerged stronger, more resilient, and wiser from the lessons of the past.

As the country commemorates another year of independence, officials stressed that freedom remains a continuing responsibility shared by every Filipino to safeguard democracy, strengthen communities, and contribute to national development.
