TAGBILARAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has accepted the decision of bishop-elect Gerardo “Jingboy” Saco Jr. to withdraw from his episcopal ordination, Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy confirmed on Tuesday.

Uy said he was informed by Charles Brown that the Holy Father had accepted Saco’s request not to proceed with his ordination.

“Bishop-elect Gerardo ‘Jingboy’ Saco Jr. has communicated to the Holy Father his decision not to proceed with his episcopal ordination. The Papal Nuncio has informed me that the Holy Father has accepted his decision,” Uy said in a statement.

The Cebu archbishop expressed sadness over the development but emphasized respect for Saco’s decision, noting that it was made after deep and prayerful discernment.

“Together with the Boholano people, I assure Fr. Saco of our prayers. We also pray for the timely appointment of a new bishop who will lovingly shepherd the Diocese of Tagbilaran,” Uy added.

In an earlier statement, Saco said he would no longer push through with his episcopal ordination scheduled on May 26, explaining that his decision came after “much prayer and careful discernment.” He also assured the faithful of his continued ministry as a priest.

Saco was appointed on March 25, 2026 as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, a post previously held by Uy before his appointment as archbishop of Cebu.
