TAGBILARAN CITY — The province of Bohol has been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 as Severe Tropical Storm Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) moves closer to the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau PAGASA reported on Friday, November 7.

As of 4 p.m., the center of Uwan was estimated at 1,175 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph while moving westward at 25 kph.

Under Signal No. 1 are several towns in northeastern Bohol, including Getafe, Talibon, Buenavista, Trinidad, San Miguel, Ubay, Alicia, Mabini, Bien Unido, and President Carlos P. Garcia, where residents may experience strong winds within the next 36 hours.

According to Pagasa, these areas may experience winds ranging from 39 to 61 kph, with minimal to minor threats to life and property. Localized winds may be stronger in coastal and upland areas exposed to the prevailing direction.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said it has activated emergency monitoring and coordination centers as part of precautionary measures. Search, rescue, and relief teams have been placed on standby, while local government units were advised to ensure readiness of evacuation centers and monitor flood-prone and landslide-prone areas.

PDRRMO head Anthony Damalerio said Bohol remains on “heightened alert” following Typhoon Tino’s impact earlier this week. “We are coordinating with LGUs and all concerned agencies to ensure preparedness and safety as Uwan approaches,” he said.

Pagasa warned of possible heavy rains and rough seas over the weekend, especially along the eastern seaboards of the Visayas. Mariners and operators of small vessels are strongly advised not to venture out to sea due to expected rough to very rough conditions.

Uwan is expected to enter the PAR late Friday night or early Saturday and may rapidly intensify into a typhoon or even a super typhoon before making landfall over Northern Luzon by Sunday or early Monday.
