CORTES, BOHOL — The Barangay Council of Patrocinio has temporarily closed the Malingin Falls to swimmers due to environmental, safety, and security concerns.

In an advisory, the barangay council said the decision was prompted by the increasing volume of garbage left behind by visitors, even in upstream areas, despite the site being open to the public free of charge.

Unpredictable weather conditions also posed risks, as sudden rains can quickly cause flooding and strong currents. Officials noted that some visitors fail to leave the river immediately during such weather condition putting themselves in danger.

The council also cited security issues, reporting a rise in disruptive behavior and incidents of theft, with some individuals no longer visiting the area solely for recreation.

Addressing concerns over the lack of personnel, barangay officials explained that imposing a minimal entrance fee of P10 to P20 would still not be enough to fund daily staff, including a lifeguard. They also pointed out that parts of the surrounding area, including parking spaces, are privately owned.

Despite the closure, the barangay council emphasized that Malingin Falls, which is part of the Patrocinio river—from Dagohong to Malingin—has long been shared with the public.

However, officials expressed concern over the worsening condition of the waterway due to improper waste disposal.

The council said the area may reopen once conditions improve, particularly after organizing proper parking area, with landowners expected to impose parking fees.

Barangay officials urged the public to cooperate and practice responsible tourism to help preserve the river and ensure the safety of visitors.
