TAGBILARAN CITY — A rare species found only in Bohol is representing the Philippines in the International Mollusc of the Year 2026.
The entry, Lithoredo abatanica, locally known as “antingaw,” lives in the Abatan River and is the first known shipworm that bores through and feeds on rock instead of wood.
The University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute said the species has evolved a unique shell capable of cutting through limestone, while how it derives nutrients from rock remains under study.
Researchers are currently investigating the species under a DOST-backed project, citing its potential for biotechnology and medical applications.
The Philippine bet is competing against entries from several countries in the annual contest organized by Unitas Malacologica and partners. Public voting is open until April 26.
