TAGBILARAN CITY — Two of the most anticipated highlights of the Saulog Festival—Miss Tagbilaran and Maoy sa Mayo—have been cancelled as the city grapples with the impact of a continuing fuel crisis.

Mayor Jane Yap announced the decision following a three-hour emergency meeting on Tuesday night with members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, barangay captains, and city department heads.

The Miss Tagbilaran pageant, originally set for April 19, and the Maoy sa Mayo celebration on May 3 will no longer push through, as the city shifts its focus toward maintaining stability and protecting the welfare of residents.

Yap acknowledged that cancelling the events was a difficult decision, but emphasized that the ongoing surge in fuel prices has placed a heavy burden on transport workers, small businesses, and ordinary families.

Despite the cancellation of these major government-led activities, other key components of the Saulog Festival will continue. The Street Dancing Competition and Ritual Showdown remains scheduled on April 26, preceded by a foot procession of all barangays and a Holy Mass.

City officials said the lighting of candles along major streets will push through as a symbolic gesture of hope, unity, and faith in Señor San Jose, the city’s patron, amid the challenges brought by the crisis.

Economic activities tied to the festival will also continue, including the Saulog Bazaar and nightly events at City Hall, aimed at supporting small and medium enterprises and sustaining local livelihoods.

To further cushion the impact, the city government is rolling out response measures such as fuel subsidies and rice assistance for vulnerable sectors. All city buses will also be dedicated to the “Libre Sakay” program on designated routes.

Yap likewise warned that the city will take action against those who exploit the situation, including the possible cancellation of franchises and business permits of erring transport operators and establishments.
