The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Thursday (Jan. 22) officially launched its year-long heritage tour program for Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) 2026 delegates, opening with a cultural immersion in Bohol—the first of a series of carefully curated experiences across the country.

The inaugural tour was joined by more than 80 energy-sector delegates attending the Special Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME), organized by the Department of Energy as part of the Asean 2026 regional meetings.

Anchored on handumanan—the Cebuano word for memory or keepsake—the tour framed Bohol’s cultural and historical sites as living narratives that continue to shape the province’s tourism identity.

Honoring Bohol’s artistry and resilience
The itinerary began at the National Museum of the Philippines–Bohol, one of the country’s 22 regional museums, where delegates were introduced to the works of Boholano National Artist Napoleon Abueva. His sculptures highlighted the province’s enduring contribution to Philippine art.

The museum visit also revisited the impact of the devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Bohol in 2013, with galleries underscoring the extensive conservation and restoration efforts that followed.

Enduring sacred spaces
Highlighting Boholanos’ deep religious devotion, the tour included a visit to Santa Monica Parish Church, also known as Alburquerque Church, a Spanish-era structure built in 1842 that remains an active place of worship.

Delegates also toured the centuries-old Baclayon Church, one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, renowned for its historical importance and distinct architectural features.

Bohol’s cherished delicacies
The tour concluded with a guided farm walk at the Bohol Bee Farm, showcasing sustainable and community-based tourism practices.

Delegates took part in hands-on activities such as chocolate making, cooking demonstrations of ube biko and kalamay, raffia weaving, and ice cream tasting—offering a flavorful glimpse of Bohol’s culinary heritage.

Organized by the DOT as lead agency of the Committee on Hospitality, Tours, Site Enhancements, and Events, the heritage tour marks the start of a series of curated experiences for Asean delegates, set to roll out in various destinations nationwide throughout 2026.
