TAGBILARAN CITY — At least 12 houses were destroyed when a massive landslide struck Barangay Candanas in Garcia Hernandez, Bohol, last week, prompting authorities to recommend the area’s declaration as a danger zone.

Resident Crystal Etson, 37, recalled how her home developed cracks before it eventually collapsed. “At around 7 a.m. on November 5, I noticed cracks appearing on the floor, and by 9 a.m., they had widened,” she said. “Mikurog ko sa kahadlok (I trembled in fear).”

No one was injured or killed as families had been evacuated before the ground movement intensified.

However, residents remain fearful as the soil continues to shift, raising the risk of further landslides. Authorities said the area remains unstable and under close monitoring.

The ground movement began on November 5 after Typhoon Tino and worsened when Typhoon Uwan drenched the province days later, saturating the soil and destabilizing slopes.

Anthony Damalerio, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said his office has recommended that Barangay Candanas be declared a danger zone to protect residents from potential hazards.

“Because of the continuing ground movement, we strongly recommend declaring the area as a danger zone,” Damalerio said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC), chaired by Mayor Jess Baja, is expected to formalize the declaration before forwarding it to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) for further assessment and verification.
