The province of Bohol is adopting a science-based and community-led model for marine tourism to safeguard whale sharks and coastal ecosystems.
The plan was discussed during a joint session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s Committees on Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and Tourism on October 20 at the New Capitol Building.
Dr. Ben Malayang III of UP Los Baños presented a proposal for a Southern Bohol Marine Wildlife Eco-Educational Tourism Corridor, promoting responsible tourism that blends conservation, education, and livelihood opportunities.
“This approach highlights a complete marine wildlife experience while ensuring the welfare of species and ecosystems,” Malayang said.
The proposal discourages feeding marine animals, citing studies showing coral reef degradation from such practices in Oslob, Cebu.
Board Member Atty. Jamie Aumentado-Villamor, who chairs both committees, said they will review and update existing ordinances to include the proposed eco-tourism corridor and fund awareness campaigns for local governments.
The initiative supports Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado’s Strategic Governance Roadmap, aligning with Bohol’s status as a Unesco Global Geopark and Regenerative Island.
