GETAFE, BOHOL — What could have been a night of disaster turned into a story of resilience and teamwork after MV OceanJet 2 ran aground off the waters of Getafe on Sunday evening, leaving 53 people—36 passengers and 17 crew—stranded.
The distress call came in at 8:40 p.m. and within minutes, the Coast Guard Sub-Station Getafe, together with the Getafe Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), mobilized a Quick Response Team aboard a motorbanca to reach the grounded vessel.
By 10 p.m., all passengers and crew were safely evacuated to Getafe Port, where they were given assistance. Authorities confirmed no one was injured.
Residents near Barangay Nasingin also pitched in, helping responders navigate the shallow waters and ensuring evacuees were quickly accommodated once they reached shore.
“This incident is proof that maritime safety is not just the Coast Guard’s job. It is a shared responsibility—between authorities, local governments, and the community,” a Coast Guard officer said.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is conducting an investigation into the cause of the grounding, while the OceanJet vessel will undergo inspection before it is cleared to sail again.
