17-year-old student drowns in Loboc town

LOBOC, Bohol — A 17-year-old Grade 11 student drowned while swimming in the waters off Sitio Susu in Barangay Villaflor in Loboc town, on Saturday afternoon, August 30, 2025.

The victim, a resident of Barangay Oy, was with several classmates when the incident happened around 1 p.m., according to the Loboc Police Station.

Police Staff Sergeant Luigi Corpuz, desk officer of Loboc Police, said they learned of the incident through social media and immediately responded.

Initial investigation revealed that the group of minors had gone swimming without their parents’ knowledge, taking advantage of the school break. Witnesses said the victim was reportedly caught in a whirlpool and struggled until he drowned.

After more than two hours of search operations, the victim’s body was recovered at around 4:28 p.m. and brought to the nearest hospital. The search and retrieval was assisted by personnel from the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Loay, CGSS Tagbilaran, and TARSIER divers. The operation was officially terminated at 5 p.m. with no further incidents.

The victim’s remains are now at a funeral home in Loboc.
