A stray bullet struck a residential house in Barangay Booy, Tagbilaran City, on New Year’s Eve.
The Tagbilaran City Police Station (TCPS) reported the bullet hit the roof of a house around 12:08 a. m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, just as the fireworks display in the city began to reach its peak. The bedroom was unoccupied at that time, as the family had gathered in the living room to have their annual prayer to welcome 2025.
No one was injured in the incident.
However, it has raised concerns about the safety of revelers who engaged in indiscriminate firing during the holiday festivities.
It is believed that the bullet was fired into the air by an unknown individual, part of the widespread New Year’s Eve tradition of firing firearms in celebration.
Lt. Col. John Kareen Escober, chief of TCPS, dispatched a team to investigate the situation. Authorities are now working to determine the exact origin of the stray bullet and identify the responsible party.
The PNP has issued a reminder to the public to refrain from using firearms to celebrate the New Year, warning that such actions are illegal and dangerous.
Mayor Jane Yap reiterated her call to be responsible during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“The danger of stray bullets is very real. This reckless behavior can have life-threatening consequences, ” she said.
This recent incident adds to a growing list of New Year’s Eve-related accidents across the country. Authorities continue to urge citizens to celebrate responsibly and avoid putting others in harm’s way with reckless acts such as indiscriminate gunfire.
