With the province’s commitment to environmental sustainability and highlighting the eco-friendly potential of bamboo, it will hold the second Bohol World Bamboo Day, with the municipality of Lila as host.
Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado signed Executive Order (EO) No. 32 on August 29, creating the different technical working committees (TWC) in preparation for the event, which will happen on September 28, 2024.
This event is one of the Capitol’s main initiatives, especially in the awareness of the bamboo’s significance in Bohol’s ecosystem, sustaining its UNESCO Global Geopark and Regenerative Island status, which is the first and only in the country.
The committees will mobilize required preparations, such as site identification, area clearing, hole digging, hauling of seedlings, and other logistical matters for the yearly bamboo growing activity.
Meanwhile, Bohol Bamboo Industry Development Council (BBIDC) Chairman and Garcia Hernandez Mayor Jess Baja convened the TWC in a meeting on August 19 at the Capitol for the province-wide initiative.
Aside from Capitol offices and the local government unit of Lila, the technical working groups comprise national government agencies, non-government organizations, local government associations and councils, higher education institutions, the public sector, and private partners.
Last year, BBIDC institutionalized the annual World Bamboo Day celebration in the province, with the inaugural hosting of Garcia Hernandez in observance of World Bamboo Day.
12,000 seedlings were provided for the bamboo growing activity last year, with iron bamboo propagules planted at the Bayluko Hills and Timber area of Barangay Candanas on September 23 last year.
The upcoming activity is aligned with EO No. 879 of 2010, creating the Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Council, and EO No. 39 of 2022, declaring September as the Philippine Bamboo Month.
Bamboo is known for its diverse economic and environmental benefits, including air filtration, construction, furniture making, handicrafts, erosion control, and use as aviation fuel.
As agreed by agencies, such as the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, bamboo is recognized as a national industry cluster through the Bamboo Industry Development Program. (PiMO/JSS)
