Boholana weighlifter Vanessa Sarno
bombed out of the women’s 71-kilogram division of women’s weighlifting at the 2024 Paris Olympics after failing to lift 100kg in the snatch at the South Paris Arena early Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024. (Manila time).
Sarno, 20, the first woman Olympian from Bohol, who owns the national record of 110-kg in snatch, failed to lift 100 kgs in three attempts and immediately bomb out of competition in her Olympic debut.
This marked the end of the Philippine weightlifting team’s campaign in Paris.
Each lifter is given three attempts in each of the two rounds. The first round is the snatch and the second is clean and jerk. Because Sarno failed to make a successful lift in three attempts in snatch, she can no longer lift in the clean and jerk.
Family, friends and supporters in Bohol gathered along the highway at Barangay Bool in Tagbilaran City.
Two TV screens were provided by the City Government of Tagbilaran headed by Mayor Jane Yap who was in the area to give support.
Sarno’s mother Emely said that she was still proud of her daughter.
“Win na win gihapon ka namo. Wala makuha ang medalya champion gihapon ka namo,” she said. “Proud mi kaayo ninyo.”
Yap said there will be a hero’s welcome for Sarno.
“Usa ka Bol-anon, usa ka babae ug usa ka Tagbilaranon. We are proud of you,” said Yap.
“Looking forward to her next Olympic game, this is only a moving forward,” she added.
