Judith Bonhayag, a Barangay Health Worker (BHW) from Barangay Salvador in Cortes town, has been named Central Visayas’ Kampeon ng Kalusugan Outstanding BHWs awardee.
Bonhayag received the citation along with a cash incentive of P5,000 during the second day of the Health Promotion Summit for Barangay Health Workers at Summit Galleria in Cebu City on Thursday, August 8.
She will become the region’s entry to the national congress for BHWs.
Bonhayag has been serving as a BHW for 42 years, 34 years of which were spent as an officer of the provincial federation – appointed PRO for more than a year, secretary for 20 years, and president for 6 years.
In her testimony, Bonhayag recounted as one of her greatest achievements her contribution to the institutionalization of the Bohol BHW federation as well as her participation in various training and seminars that enhanced her health capacities.
Taking pride in her frontline role of providing basic health and services, Bonhayag expressed gratitude to strong partners in implementing health programs.
She underscored the guidance and support of the Governor’s Office as well as provincial and municipal health offices.
The provincial government, under the leadership of Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado, underscores inclusive health and social services as crucial to advancing resilient communities in its strategic governance roadmap.
Along with Bonhayag in attendance at the summit were Artemia Lison and Dan Blyke Bantugan of the Provincial Health Office and 144 other BHWs from Bohol.
The summit, organized by the Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas Center for Health Development (CVCHD) highlights the critical necessity of investing in and advancing health human resources, with a particular focus on strengthening the capabilities of BHWs.
It provides a vital opportunity to connect with them, foster a strong sense of community, and share best practices in health promotion, thereby empowering them to excel in their roles as barangay-level Health Education and Promotion Officers (HEPOs), according to DOH.
The activity is also in support of the Health Promotion Framework Strategy and the expanded health promotion mandate of Republic Act No. 11223, or the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law. (PIMO/LMS)
