Tragedy struck in the Sun Life 5150 Triathlon Bohol and Go for Gold Sunrise Sprint when a triathlete passed away during the gruelling race Sunday, July 14, 2024 at Bellevue Resort in Panglao town.
In a media statement, organizers didn’t name the casualty who died during the swim course.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of a race participant at 5150 Bohol triathlon. The athlete required medical attention during the swim portion of Sunday’s race, with event medical personnel providing support onsite before transporting to hospital where the athlete sadly passed away,” the organizers said in the statement.
” Our heartfelt condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to offer our support. We appreciate the quick work of onsite safety personnel who provided the athlete with medical support,” it added.
Close to 800 athletes joined the race consisted of a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run, considered as the biggest Olympic distance field in the country.
