The province held a commemorative ceremony in observance of Francisco Dagohoy Day, honoring the bravery and sacrifices done by the Bol-anon revolutionary.
Held at Camp Francisco Dagohoy, Tagbilaran City on July 4, this activity aimed to honor Francisco Dagohoy, the brain behind the longest revolution against the Spanish Colonization in the Philippines.
The commemorative event opened with an entry of colors and singing of hymns conducted by the Philippine National Police with the Provincial Government of Bohol’s Capitol Band. This was followed by a welcome message delivered by Police Col. Norman Nuez, chief of Provincial Community Affairs and Development Unit (PCADU).
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines- Bohol’s officer- in- charge Perlina Alo gave a historical context on how Dagohoy’s revolt started and how he rallied three thousand Boholanos in establishing a free government in Caylagan in the Sitio of Magtangtang, presently a village in the town of Danao.
This was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony participated by the Dagohoy Masonic Lodge #84, the Bohol Dagohoy Veterans Association, Inc. (BDVAI), the Department of Education (DepEd)- Tagbilaran Division, DepEd – Bohol Division; the Bohol Provincial Police Office (BPPO), the Tagbilaran City Government led by Councilor Eliezer “Ondoy” Borja, and the provincial government of Bohol led by acting governor Dionisio Victor Balite.
BDVAI president and retired AFP General Joseph Sevilla underscored the importance of remembering our history, specifically for the younger generation to pay tribute to the efforts of the revolutionaries to free the Filipinos under the Spanish Colonial Power.
Invited guests during the ceremony were treated with a special song performance courtesy of Joshibiah de Juan of the Dagohoy Mason Lodge #84.
Balite, through his inspirational message, urged his fellow Boholanos to follow the path of Francisco Dagohoy and emulate his love for the country, and face the challenges ahead of it with bravery and patriotism.
“Ipadayon nato kanunay kung unsay nasugdan ni Dagohoy sa pagatubang sa matag-adlaw na problema atong gilantaw ug unsaon nato pag sulbad niini,” Balite said.
The acting governor added that he sent a letter addressed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr during his presidential visit to the province, urging him to declare Francisco Dagohoy Day a special non-working holiday in Bohol.
Francisco Dagohoy Day is annually observed every July 4 as a special working holiday under the Republic Act No. 11444, signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte.
A native of Inabanga, Dagohoy, whose real name Francisco Sendrijas, was a cabeza de barangay who led the longest revolution in the Philippines for 85 years and 8 months. His revolt started when a Jesuit priest from his hometown refused to give his brother Sagorino Sendrijas a Christian burial after he was killed during a duel against a fugitive who went against the Catholic church.
This event was organized by BPPO, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, and the Provincial Government of Bohol. (CCAD/GMC)
