Three industrial design students from Fablab Bohol presented a unique souvenir concept during the Fasiklaban pitching event marking a decade of Fablab’s innovation in the Philippines on Thursday, May 9.
Jeannette Jumawan, Cheenie Mangilit, and Allyssa Denise Varquez created a souvenir designed to evoke fond memories of Bohol, incorporating iconic elements from the province.
Their creation, a character-based souvenir collection named “Pahalipay,” features three distinctive characters inspired by Bohol’s cultural icons.
The first character, “Ubiwani,” represents Ubi Kinampay, also known as the “Queen of the Philippine Yam.” This character is inspired by the traditional costumes worn during the Ubi Festival.
The second, “Ca-lami,” is modeled after Calamay, a popular sticky sweet treat.
Finally, “Paghulma” draws inspiration from Bohol’s traditional pot makers.
The concept began as a simple midterm project to create a product that would represent Bohol and resonate with tourists visiting the province.
Fablab Bohol’s director, Jerome Manatad, recognized the potential in these students’ innovation, noting that it is entirely Fablab-made and meticulously hand-painted.
The students identified several challenges in the tourism industry related to souvenirs, such as a lack of quality, authenticity, and local origin. They aimed to create a product that would stand out in the market and be something visitors would be proud to take home.
Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado attended the event and expressed his support for Fablab Bohol, the first Fabrication Laboratory in the Philippines.
In his address, Aumentado highlighted the importance of innovation in driving economic growth, stating that “it is our responsibility to serve as an example to everyone, showing that innovation plays a key role in developing our economy.”
The students were delighted that their product is now in the process of obtaining a patent, securing the unique nature of their design and its association with Bohol’s rich cultural heritage. (PIMO/ML)
