Athletes from Bohol and Tagbilaran City garnered a total of 10 medals in the 5th Karate Pilipinas championships held in Tagaytay City’s Combat Sports Complex held on March 1-3.
The team scored one gold, four silvers, and five bronze medals in the tournament to determine the country’s line-up for the Asian Championship.
The lone gold medal was courtesy of Czar Ezekiel Dosdos who topped the intermediate kata 8-9 years old boys category.
The silver medalists were Stiffany Mae Alvarez of the Kumite under 21 years old female category and Andrea Rosé Abuyabor of the Kumite 68 kg under 21 years old category.
Eveline Van der Hoek also placed second in the junior 59 kg girls’ kumite category while Feliz Emm Roluna took the Boholanos’ fourth silver medal in the beginners’ kata in the 12–13 years old girls category.
Settling for bronze medals were Wyna Grace Curayag in the Kumite 68 kg under 21 years old category, Jerik James Suma-oy in the junior open kata category, and Mark Vincent Lucero in the under 21 years old open kata male category.
Anthony Cagay also took a bronze medal in the cadet 52 kg Kumite boys category, while Eraiza Cagay likewise placed third in the 12–13 years old open kata girls category.
Officially registered under the prestigious SSKI-JKS (Sphinx Shotokan Karatedo International—Japan Karate Shoto) organization, most Boholano athletes were from the powerhouse University of Bohol Karatedo Team, which had collected medals in national and international competitions in previous years.
Sonny Alvarez and Ernesto Cagay Sr. coached the Tagbilaran City and Bohol province delegations, respectively.
Van der Hoek, Anthony and Eraiza Cagay are supported under the Provincial Youth Development Office (PYDO).
PYDO’s Larga Program, under Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado, is the Capitol’s initiative to support the holistic development of youth through sports, as envisioned in the strategic governance roadmap of the provincial government.
Under the same program, Coach Atanacio “Arch” Pellicer III of Bohol’s Archery Team recently emerged champion in the compound category during the Mission Hills Invitational Archery Tournament in Antipolo, Rizal, held on March 3. (PiMO/JSS)
