Rommel Ganzon captured the recently-concluded 2023 CPG Chess Cup on Nov. 4-5 held at the 4th Floor, Ceremonial Hall, New Capitol Building, Tagbilaran City.
The 38-year-old Cebuano bested 133 other participants including 10 nationally-ranked players in the tournament.
Ganzon scored eight out of the total possible nine points, losing just one game in the entire tournament and won the top prize worth P15,000.
Norman Longjas and Alekhine Nouri finished second and third respectively and settled for P10,000 and P7,000 that came with it.
The Provincial Youth Development Office (PYDO) which organized the 2023 Chess Cup, also handed out four special prizes to the top kiddies, ladies, juniors, and seniors’ categories for Boholano players representing each congressional district worth P2,000 each.
The 2023 CPG Chess Cup is an annual chess tournament held every Nov. 4 in commemoration of the late President Carlos P. Garcia’s birth date.
The chess tournament is in recognition of the late President’s passion for the sport. (PIMO/MAV)
