The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP)- Bohol conducted an educational tour for college students on built heritage structures and how they were rebuilt after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 2013.

The activity, entitled “Pagbalik-Duaw Human sa Usa ka Dekada: Lessons learned from the 2023 Bohol Earthquake,” was in collaboration with the provincial government through the Center for Culture and Arts Development Office and Tagbilaran City.

Architecture and engineering students from the Bohol Island State University and Holy Name University took part in the educational tour to the Holy Cross Parish in Maribojoc and the Our Lady of Light Parish in Loon on Oct. 26.

Participants learned about how ceiling paintings and the retablo mayor of the Holy Cross Parish were revamped after the earthquake, with Jacquelou Curambao-Aballe, one of the artists tasked to restore them during the National Heritage Reconstruction and Restoration Program in Central Visayas.

Aballe talked about the methods and techniques they used in its restoration and the goal to preserve them as artist Rey Francia painted them in the 1920s. The artist said the restoration hopes to retain Francia’s work and its historical and cultural significance in Bohol.

The students made their way to the Our Lady of Light Parish, where they learned how it was rebuilt from ground zero with structural engineer Karl Quiobe.

During the lecture, Quiobe discussed identifying the structural flaws of the church and how they were destroyed during the earthquake and talked about restoration methods used in rebuilding to help them survive other natural hazards.

This was a culminating activity for Museums and Galleries Month, celebrated every October, and also to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 7.2 Earthquake in Bohol. (PIMO/GMC)
