Businessman and former Bohol Calape Mayor Ernest Herrera II and his wife, Vanessa Herrera, voluntarily surrendered in a mall along General Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City, after a warrant of arrest was issued against them for a case of estafa.
The warrant of arrest was issued by the Municipal Trial Court in Cities in Danao City, Cebu, against the couple for alleged estafa.
Judge Mae Lizbeth Avila Williams furnished the warrant of arrest dated February 6, 2023.
According to the Investigation and Detection Management Unit (IDMU) of the Cebu City Police Office, the Herrera couple “voluntarily surrendered” in a mall on Gen. Maxilom Ave. on Tuesday, February 7.
Police Senior Master Sergeant Julius Regis of the IDMU said the couple was able to provide a copy of the release order upon their supposed apprehension.
Regis said the lawyer of the accused contacted their unit to voluntarily submit the surrender of its clients.
Williams set the bail for each of the accused at P16,000.
Regis said they were not able to detain the couple since they have presented a release order signed by Judge Marlon Jay Moneva of the Regional Trial Court in Cebu City.
A report from SunStar said that in February 2019, Richard and Janice Kintanar, business partners of the Hererras, filed a complaint against the latter before the Danao City Prosecutor’s Office for theft and estafa.
The Prosecutor’s Office, however, dismissed the case for lack of merit in March 2019.
The Herrera couple have yet to issue a statement.
