A replica of the Black Nazarene or Poong itim na Nazareno, a life-sized statue of a suffering Jesus fallen under the weight of the cross, arrived in Bohol on Saturday, Nov. 20.
Upon the arrival of the sacred image at Bohol Panglao International Airport, the image was displayed to the public in a procession across Panglao, Tagbilaran City and Dauis.
The image, which was a gift given to Diocese of Tagbilaran from Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, was then brought to the Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Dauis where the image will stay until a shrine will finish soon.
“The image was then brought to the Assumption of Our Lady Shrine-Parish Church where it will temporarily stay until it’s shrine is finished. Talks and other liturgical activities followed after the reception,” said Bishop Abet Uy.
Devotees can visit and venerate the image at Dauis Church.
Every year on January 9, millions of Filipinos gather in Manila for a procession of the Black Nazarene along a 6.5 km route from Rizal (Luneta) Park to the minor basilica in Quiapo.
Few religious celebrations anywhere in the world can match this feast in terms of the number and fervor of devotees surrounding the procession.
