Giant leatherback sea turtle found dead in Dauis

A giant leatherback male sea turtle locally called here as pawikan was found dead along the seashore of Barangay San Isidro, Dauis town by residents on Tuesday, May 11.

According to Bohol Environment Management Office (Bemo), a team composed of Dr. Frederick Madriñan, veterinarian of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian – Bohol, Ian Macaraya and Ralph Monte of Bemo, technical staff from the DENR-CENRO Tagbilaran, and Maria Aileme Dalagan, Fishery Technician of local government of Dauis, inspected and performed necropsy of the carcass.

The turtle was identified as a juvenile female leatherback sea turtle with a length of 140 cm and a width of 100 cm.

Bemo said the carcass is in advanced decomposition.

During the necropsy, the team found nylons in its large intestine which was used for multiple hook and line.

The carcass was buried in the beach area of Barangay San Isidro in Dauis town.
