Bohol officials condole with Dela Serna’s family

Several Bohol officials sent their messages of sympathies to the family of former governor Victor Dela Serna.

The Bohol provincial government thru Gov. Arthur Yap thanked Dela Serna for his “service to the people”.

“My heartfelt sympathies goes out to his family represented by his loving wife, Marybelle. We pray for the eternal repose of his soul,” he added.

Tributes poured in following the demise of Dela Serna calling it as an “irreparable loss” to the province.

Bohol 2nd district Representative Erico Aristotle Aumentado said Boholanos have lost their “pride”.

” I, personally, lost another father, mentor and moral compass in my political journey. This loss is made more painful as Bohol is under trying times due to the pandemic. Painful because we lost a crusader for good governance amidst controversial times. My family is battling another void specially because the De La Serna’s are like kindred souls to us. Atty. Vic you will remain victorious in your crusade because the lessons you taught me are deeply etched in my heart,” said Aumentado.

“May the angels sing their triumphant hymn as they welcome you, Atty. Vic, to the kingdom of god!! We, mortals, will continue what you fought for because we only have the Boholanos as our partners. May you rest in peace, Atty. Vic, ” Aumentado added.

Tagbilaran City Mayor John Geesnell “Baba” Yap said Dela Serna was one of “his idols”.

“Rest in peace sa isa sa akong mga idol, OIC Governor Victor Dela Serna. Salamat sa tanan tabang. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family labi na ni tita Bengay,” he said.

” I will be forever be missing this very brilliant and intelligent person who in one way or another never fails to HELP and encourage me to stand firm as a leader against all odds. THANK YOU Atty Victor de la Serna. May your soul rest in peace in God’s Kingdom. Our sincere prayers for your soul, ” said Panglao Mayor Leonila Montero.

De la Serna died on early Wednesday (July 8, 2020) morning. He was 78 years old.

De la Serna graduated from San Beda College of Law in 1965. He became the topnotcher of the bar examinations in the same year giving pride to Bohol as the first Bol-anon bar top-notcher.

He taught law at San Beda College and one of his students was President Rodrigo Duterte.

During the 2016 campaign sorties, Duterte said that Dela Serna was his favorite professor.

Dela Serna was also a delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention and was later on appointed OIC governor of Bohol following the 1986 EDSA revolution during the administration of former President Corazon Aquino.

In 1988, Dela Serna passed the California State Bar and practiced law in the USA from 1989 and 1995.

The San Beda Law Alumni Association (SBLAA) voted unanimously to elevate Dela Serna to the 2017 San Beda Law Hall of Fame, the highest recognition given by the San Beda Law to its Alumni who left an important legacy to the professional sector through their unceasing passion for service, thus becoming a source of great pride and inspiration for the Bedan Community and the Filipino.

Dela Serna was among the 25 legal luminaries assembled by President Rodrigo Duterte to review the 1987 Constitution.
