The province of Bohol was put into General Community Quarantine (GCQ) last May 16 to maintain the prevention measures and other proper health standards under the “new norm” community due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
And just recently the National Action Plan (NAP) against COVID-19 Chief Implementer, Carlito G. Galvez, Jr eyed Bohol to become the “model – province” of the new normal.
The Boholanos continue to manifest their resiliency by helping each other revive the local-based economies and maintaining focus on the primary needs and health security of the people.
Last Tuesday, young Boholano food and agriculture advocates spearheaded by Dalareich Polot, Joy Angeli Uy and Duke Minoza kicked off the “Grow My Own Food- Bohol Backyard Garden Contest together with their partners amidst COVID-19 crisis.
Through this initiative, they have distributed farm inputs like seeds, seedlings, vermicast and information materials to fifty (50) qualified displaced workers and youth participants in Bohol province.
Young Boholano food and agriculture advocates launched the “Grow My Own Food- Bohol Backyard Garden Contest.”
“GROW MY OWN FOOD – BOHOL BACKYARD FOOD GARDEN CONTEST”, is a competition designed for displaced workers and deserving families for them to showcase their food gardening skills and ability to grow their own food, organically and sustainably.
The contest is in partnership with Governor Arthur Yap, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Agriculture Training Institute Central Visayas headed by Dr. Carolyn May O. Daquio, BAHRR ( Bohol Assoc. Of Hotels, Resorts & Restaurants), KABOOM ( Kapunungan sa Bol-anong Organikong Mag-uuma) and AGREA. The contest is also in response to the PLANT. PLANT. PLANT national program of our Department of Agriculture secretary, Sec. William Dar.
The tourism industry in Bohol is greatly affected because of the continuing crisis and concerns brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. It resulted in the sudden loss of jobs for some of Boholanos and growing number of displaced workers.
“Grow My Own Food- Backyard contest” is initiated in pursuance of its main goal to lift and provide answers to the issues of food and nutrition security in the province. And also inspire the people in Bohol most especially those displaced, to grow their own food to help sustain their families – as we raised together our communities.
The initiators believe that food is very essential and important to be able to sustain and survive, especially in significant events nowadays. If a family and the community work together to grow their own food, there is no doubt that we can survive, even during a pandemic.
