TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group have intensified their campaign against illegal wildlife trade in Bohol following the arrest of an individual allegedly involved in the illegal sale of lovebirds and other wildlife species in Baclayon town on Oct. 1.
The joint enforcement operation highlighted the continuing efforts of government agencies to curb the illegal collection, possession, transport, hunting and trading of wildlife in the province.
Police Maj. Bonifacio W. Tanola Jr., chief of the Bohol Maritime Police Station, said sustained coordination between law enforcement agencies was crucial in protecting wildlife and enforcing environmental laws.
“Our partnership with DENR is anchored on a common responsibility—to protect our wildlife and prevent illegal hunting, collection, possession, and trade. Through close coordination, information sharing, and timely action, we can make enforcement more effective,” Tanola said.
The DENR-Bohol said it continues to validate reports, monitor suspected wildlife violations and coordinate with law enforcement agencies to ensure that appropriate action is taken against those found violating wildlife protection laws.
Authorities also acknowledged the role of the public and social media in reporting suspected illegal wildlife activities. They, however, stressed that information must be properly verified and supported by evidence before enforcement action is taken.
The agencies reminded the public that Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, provides penalties for unlawful activities involving wildlife.
The DENR urged residents to report suspected illegal wildlife collection, possession, transport or trade to the proper authorities.
It also reminded the public that wild animals are part of the country’s natural heritage and should not be treated as commodities for unauthorized sale or possession.
The DENR and PNP Maritime Group said they would continue strengthening inter-agency cooperation and public participation to protect Bohol’s wildlife and hold violators accountable under the law.
