TAGBILARAN CITY — The Bohol Island State University (BISU) has expressed profound grief over the death of its Administrative Officer II, Dexter “Dex” Timbal Hinayon, as police alleged that the 33-year-old university employee was murdered by his 18-year-old nephew.
Hinayon, a resident of Barangay Can-olin, Candijay, Bohol, was found dead in a grassy, secluded area of the same barangay on Tuesday, July 21, after he had been reported missing for two days.
In an official statement released Tuesday, BISU described Hinayon as “not only a dedicated employee but also a valued member of the BISU family whose service, commitment, and kindness have touched many lives within our institution.”
The university said his untimely passing has brought “profound grief” to colleagues, students, alumni, and stakeholders across all BISU campuses.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers to his family, loved ones, and friends during this time of immense sorrow,” the university said.
Investigators said Hinayon’s cellphone, which had been left at Kusina Nativo Restaurant where he also worked as manager, became a crucial piece of evidence that led authorities to the location of his body and to the identification of the suspect.
Hinayon served as director of the Cashier’s Office at BISU-Candijay Campus. His family reported him missing after he failed to return home for two days.
Police investigation showed that the victim was allegedly strangled at one location before his body was dumped in another grassy area nearby. His mouth had been sealed with tape, while his hands were bound and his knees and chest were also wrapped with adhesive tape.
Police identified the suspect as Jesse Requiz, 18, Hinayon’s nephew.
Authorities said Requiz’s father is the victim’s first cousin.
Police later approached Requiz while he was attending classes and invited him for questioning. During the investigation, he allegedly confessed to the killing and is now facing a murder charge.
BISU appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and from sharing unverified information while authorities continue their investigation.
“The University places its trust in the proper legal processes and fervently hopes that the truth will be established and justice will be served with utmost urgency,” the statement said.
The university added that Hinayon’s death is “not only a tragedy for BISU-Candijay Campus but a painful loss for the entire University community,” as it called on the community to remain united in prayer and hope that truth, justice, and peace will prevail.
