The province of Bohol and the United States Peace Corps are exploring more avenues for partnerships.

Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado welcomed Marguerite Roy, US Peace Corps country director, during a courtesy visit at the Capitol on April 15.

Roy expressed gratitude for what she described as “a lovely reception” during their arrival.

She explained that they are eager to work with the provincial government in showcasing the work and the best practices of the Peace Corps in the province.

The five-day visit will also provide opportunities to expand their partnership where it is needed, she added.

At present, seven peace corps volunteers are assigned in Bohol, immersed in the social work, education, marine conservation, youth in development, health, agriculture, environment and economic development sectors.

This includes Alyssa Jones who is working with the Bohol Crisis Intervention Center (BCIC) of the provincial government.

“My fellow volunteers told me I hit the lottery in Bohol, that I’m the luckiest to be trained in the Philippines and in Bohol,” Jones said, expressing her gratitude for the warmth and kindness she experienced in the four months she has been here.

The governor for his part also thanked the US Peace Corps for choosing the province as he joyfully recalled having shared a room at their home with a volunteer back in 2001 when they were one of the host families.

Boni Bucol, training director, reported that 60 or 70 more volunteers are expected to be assigned in the country in July this year.

The US peace corps offers service opportunities in more than 60 countries where volunteers live and work side by side with community members on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations.
