TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — A total of 183 green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) hatchlings safely made their way to the sea on July 3 after emerging from a protected nest at Hennan Premier Coast in Barangay Tawala, Panglao.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the hatchlings came from a clutch of 198 eggs that had been incubating for 51 days. Fifteen eggs remain under close monitoring as the hatching period continues.
DENR Regional Executive Director Laudemir Salac said the successful release highlights the importance of collaboration in wildlife conservation.
“This achievement proves that conservation efforts truly bear fruit when government, the private sector, and local communities work together. Every protected nest and every hatchling that reaches the sea is a meaningful step toward securing the future of our marine biodiversity,” Salac said.
Bohol Officer-in-Charge Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Wilson Henson said each hatchling symbolizes hope for healthier marine ecosystems.
“Protecting nesting sites today helps ensure these remarkable species will continue to thrive for generations,” Henson said.
The DENR credited the successful conservation effort to the combined support of the Philippine Coast Guard, Hennan Premier Coast, and other partner organizations that helped protect the nesting site and facilitate the hatchlings’ safe release.
Green sea turtles are among the marine species protected under Philippine environmental laws.
Conservation measures, such as safeguarding nesting beaches and monitoring hatchlings, are considered vital to improving the survival of the endangered species in the wild.
