TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — The provincial government of Bohol has formally applied for Geographical Indication (GI) protection for Ubi kinampay, a move aimed at preserving the authenticity and heritage of one of the province’s most iconic agricultural products.
Gov. Aris Aumentado, through the Bohol Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (Bedipo), has filed the application with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), seeking legal recognition for the province’s famed purple yam variety.
The application forms part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to protect and promote products that are deeply rooted in Bohol’s culture, history, and economy.
Known as the “Queen of Philippine Yams,” Ubi kinampay is distinguished by its rich flavor, fragrant aroma, smooth texture, and vibrant purple color. These unique characteristics are attributed to
Bohol’s natural environment, including its fertile soil and favorable climate, as well as generations of traditional farming practices.
The crop has gained national and international recognition as a Geofood product of Bohol, the country’s first Unesco Global Geopark.
It has become a sought-after ingredient in a variety of culinary products, helping establish Bohol’s reputation as a center for premium ube production.
Geographical Indication protection is an intellectual property right that identifies products whose qualities and reputation are linked to a specific place of origin. Once granted, the protection will ensure that only authentic Ubi kinampay produced according to established standards can carry the Bohol name.
The application is currently undergoing evaluation by IPOPHL.
The review includes an assessment of technical documents outlining the crop’s production area, cultivation methods, quality standards, labeling requirements, and evidence demonstrating the connection between the product and its geographic origin.
Provincial officials said the initiative is expected to strengthen the market position of Ubi kinampay, increase consumer trust, and provide greater economic opportunities for farmers and producers across the province.
The application also reflects years of investment by the provincial government in improving production systems, supporting growers, promoting research, and preserving the cultural traditions associated with the crop.
If approved, Ubi kinampay will become Bohol’s second product to receive local geographical indication protection, following the registration of the province’s renowned Asin Tibuok from Alburquerque.
Officials believe the designation will not only protect the integrity of ubi kinampay but also further enhance Bohol’s standing as a producer of heritage food products while promoting sustainable agricultural development in the province.
