PANGLAO, Bohol — A short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) was found stranded and already dead along Doljo Beach in Panglao town on the morning of June 9, according to marine conservation group Balyena.org.

The whale was reported freshly dead when it was discovered. Responders from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bantay Dagat, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted initial documentation and measurements before burying the animal shortly afterward.

Balyena.org said it is seeking additional information about the stranding incident, including photographs, observations from responders, and details on the whale’s condition when it was first found.

The group emphasized that marine mammal strandings provide valuable opportunities for researchers to study the health, behavior, and threats faced by species in the wild.

Proper documentation of stranded animals—including body condition, visible injuries, measurements, decomposition stage, and environmental conditions—can help determine possible causes of death and improve future response efforts.

Such records also contribute to monitoring marine mammal populations and assessing the impacts of human activities and environmental changes on marine ecosystems.

Balyena.org thanked the responders who assisted in handling the incident and appealed to anyone with additional information about the stranding to contact the organization.

The cause of the whale’s death has yet to be determined.
