TAGBILARAN CITY — Bohol strengthened its commitment to energy security and sustainable development as government leaders, energy experts, and stakeholders convened for the Bohol Leaders Forum on Renewable Energy on Wednesday, June 3.
The forum, organized by the Bohol Association of Non-Government Organizations Inc. (Bangon Inc.) in partnership with the provincial government of Bohol through the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office, sought to align the province’s strategic direction toward accelerated renewable energy deployment and stronger local government participation in clean energy initiatives.
Governor Aris Aumentado underscored the importance of renewable energy in ensuring both environmental sustainability and economic growth.
“The Bohol Renewable Energy Leaders Forum comes at a defining moment for our province,” Aumentado said, stressing the need for stronger local implementation of renewable energy policies to attract investments, improve energy security, and support long-term development.
Bangon Inc. President Francis Bernard Batoy called on stakeholders to translate discussions into concrete actions that would ensure reliable and sustainable energy access for communities across the province.
Department of Energy Assistant Director Ruby de Guzman presented the country’s renewable energy goals under the National Renewable Energy Program and the Philippine Energy Plan, emphasizing the role of local governments in achieving national targets.
Former Energy Secretary and now Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla shared lessons from Leyte’s experience, highlighting the importance of developing local power sources, solar energy projects, and battery storage systems to strengthen energy resilience and reduce dependence on external power supply.
Rolando Distura also discussed Iloilo’s efforts to integrate renewable energy into public services, particularly in schools and hospitals, through collaboration among local governments, legislators, and national agencies.
Meanwhile, Bohol Board Member Jamie Aumentado Villamor outlined the province’s renewable energy initiatives, including the coal ban ordinance, Renewable Energy Code, and the establishment of the Bohol Renewable Energy Board. She also presented future strategies aimed at balancing economic growth with environmental protection.
The forum provided local chief executives and planning officers with insights on policies, governance mechanisms, and practical approaches to accelerate renewable energy adoption at the municipal level.
