TAGBILARAN CITY—The Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved a proposed resolution granting tricycle drivers and operators provisional authority to impose a P5 increase on existing fare rates, citing the continuing surge in fuel prices and economic hardship.
Under Proposed Resolution No. 119-26, the 16th City Council authorized operators and drivers of motorized tricycles-for-hire to collect the additional fare to help offset rising operational costs.
The measure, sponsored by Councilor Leonides Borja and co-sponsored by Councilor Neri Zamora II, emphasized the worsening impact of high fuel prices and basic commodity costs on both drivers and commuters.
In the resolution, the council noted that fewer tricycles have been plying city routes due to unprofitable operations, while many drivers are experiencing significant income losses.
“To counter the public inconvenience and adverse economic conditions, there is a need to effect a provisional increase on existing regular fare rates,” the resolution stated.
The council described the P5 increase as “just and equitable,” considering the current economic situation and its effect on the livelihood of tricycle operators and their families.
The measure also aims to encourage drivers to continue operating, ensuring the availability of public transportation for city residents.
Copies of the resolution will be furnished to the Office of the City Mayor, led by Jane Censoria Yap, and other concerned offices for information and implementation.
The provisional fare hike comes amid broader concerns over rising fuel prices, which have significantly affected transportation and daily living costs across the country.
