TAGBILARAN CITY — A content creator had a close encounter with a highly venomous marine creature after unknowingly picking up a Blue‑ringed octopus while at the beach in Anda.
Content creator Anna Marie Gultiano said she did not realize the small octopus she found and held was dangerous. She even filmed it for social media, amused by its unusual appearance.
Experts later explained that the blue-ringed octopus, usually about the size of a golf ball, carries tetrodotoxin, a powerful neurotoxin also found in puffer fish. Even a tiny amount of the toxin can paralyze or kill a person.
Marine experts, however, noted that the species is generally not aggressive and typically releases its venom only when threatened or handled.
Authorities reminded the public—especially swimmers and fishermen—to avoid touching unfamiliar marine animals to prevent possible danger.
They also advised that in cases of jellyfish stings, the affected area should immediately be rinsed with vinegar, avoid rubbing the wound, and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Despite the risky encounter, Gultiano was unharmed after handling the venomous octopus.
The incident serves as a reminder that even small marine creatures can pose serious risks if people are unaware of their nature.
