TAGBILARAN CITY — Bohol has been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 as Tropical Storm Basyang (international name: Penha) intensified while moving westward over the Philippine Sea, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported late Wednesday night.

In its Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 5 issued at 11 p.m. on February 4, Pagasa said Basyang strengthened into a tropical storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.

As of 10 p.m., the storm was located about 560 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, moving westward at 15 kph.

Under TCWS No. 1, Bohol may experience strong winds ranging from 39 to 61 kph within the next 36 hours, posing minimal to minor threats to life and property. Pagasa warned that winds may be stronger in coastal and upland areas exposed to the prevailing wind direction.

Aside from Bohol, several areas in the Visayas, including Cebu, Siquijor, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, and Iloilo, were also placed under Signal No. 1. In Mindanao, parts of Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan provinces, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, and portions of Davao and Bukidnon are likewise under the same warning.

Meanwhile, Surigao del Sur remains under TCWS No. 2 due to the threat of gale-force winds of up to 88 kph, with possible minor to moderate impacts.

Pagasa advised the public to stay alert for possible heavy rainfall and localized hazards, and to monitor further weather advisories as Tropical Storm Basyang continues to affect large portions of the country.
