TAGBILARAN CITY — Authorities are investigating a case of alleged psychological abuse as a possible cause behind a suicide attempt by a woman at the Cogon Public Market in Tagbilaran City on Monday evening, January 12, 2026.
The victim, a 27-year-old married woman with a child, reportedly attempted to jump from the rooftop of the Cogon Public Market. Police said the woman is originally from Panglao but is currently residing in the town of Baclayon.
Initial investigation indicated that psychological abuse allegedly inflicted by her husband may have driven the woman to attempt to take her own life.
The woman was rescued following several hours of negotiation and the swift response of authorities and concerned civilians. Records from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) showed that an alarm was received at around 5:54 p.m., and the victim was safely brought down to a secure area at approximately 8:10 p.m. with the assistance of BFP personnel and other responders.
After the tense incident, the victim was immediately brought to the Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD) of the Tagbilaran City Police Station for proper documentation and assistance.
She is currently undergoing counseling and receiving further care from professionals.
Police said a thorough investigation is ongoing into the victim’s complaint against her husband to determine the appropriate legal action in connection with the incident.
