TAGBILARAN CITY — Leptospirosis cases in Bohol have continued to rise this year, largely due to widespread flooding brought about by recent storms and persistent bad weather, according to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Em-em Uy.
From January to November 22, 2025, the province recorded 80 cases, marking a 142.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Five deaths have been confirmed.
Uy said the spike became more pronounced in October and November, when heavy rains and successive flooding events created conditions favorable for the spread of the bacteria.
She explained that floodwaters often become contaminated with the urine and waste of animals such as rats, dogs, cats, cows, and carabaos—making exposure risky and infection easier.
Common symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, rashes, body pain, stomachache, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Uy urged the public to seek immediate medical consultation if they experience any of these symptoms to prevent severe complications.
Health authorities continue to remind residents to avoid wading through floodwaters, use protective gear when necessary, and maintain good hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
