MANILA — A low-pressure area east of Eastern Visayas has developed into Tropical Depression Wilma, Pagasa reported Thursday.

As of 10 a.m., Wilma was located 625 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kph and gusts of up to 55 kph. It is moving west-southwest at 20 kph.

Signal No. 1 is raised over Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte (including Siargao and Bucas Grande), and Dinagat Islands.

Pagasa warned of minimal to minor wind impacts in affected areas, with stronger winds possible in coastal and upland communities. The Northeast Monsoon will also bring strong to gale-force gusts over most of Luzon and Visayas.

Gale warnings are up over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern coasts of Luzon and Visayas, with seas reaching up to 5.5 meters. Sea travel is considered risky for all vessels.

Wilma is expected to approach Eastern Visayas or Dinagat Islands between Friday night and Saturday morning, crossing the Visayas through Monday before emerging over the Sulu Sea.

Residents and local disaster councils are urged to take precautionary measures and monitor Pagasa updates.
