The centuries-old salt-making tradition of Alburquerque, Bohol, has gained national recognition after the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) officially registered Alburquerque Asin Tibuok as a Geographical Indication (GI) product.
The GI label certifies that a product’s distinct qualities and reputation are rooted in its place of origin and the skill of its local producers. For Albur’s Asin Tibuok—often called “the unbroken salt” and prized for its smoky flavor and handmade, clay-encased form—this recognition not only safeguards its authenticity but also uplifts the livelihoods of the few remaining traditional salt makers who keep the craft alive.
IPOPHL said the registration helps protect the product from imitation, promotes consumer confidence, and boosts local economic competitiveness.
Alburquerque Asin Tibuok is now the second Filipino food product granted GI status, following Guimaras Mangoes, marking another milestone in preserving the country’s culinary heritage.
